Recent Movies Everyone Should See pt.2

A continuation of one of my older posts. Here are some more of the best movies that everyone should watch in recent memory.

Baby Driver

Anything by director Edgar Wright should be experienced since he’s an incredible director working today. But this is by far his best film in my opinion. In does such an great job of weaving together the music with what’s going on in the story and has some incredible symbolism that takes a couple of viewings to catch them all. The acting is absolutely incredible and includes some of the best actors in the industry such as Jamie Foxx, John Hamm, and Ansel Elgort. As mentioned above, the music is a big part of the film whether it’s during an action sequence or in a calm setting with nothing going on. The driving scenes are visually pleasing and makes you believe that you can easily escape the police in a high speed chase through the city. The whole film has twists and turns and definitely needs all the love in the world.

Rise/Dawn/War of the Planet of the Apes

Image result for planet of the apes franchise

This is the series that sparked my interest in film and the whole entertainment industry. Andy Serkis is the king of CGI and it definitely shows in all three of these movies. Everything about this series is absolutely incredible in my opinion. The story is intriguing and heartbreaking, who knew we would care so much over a bunch of CGI apes but the whole world fell in love with Caesar and his clan. Only Andy Serkis can create revive a dead franchise and make it even better than before. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is arguably the weakest of the three since it is an origin story for the virus that caused the downfall of humankind and the origin of our main protagonist, Caesar. Matt Reeves came in to direct Dawn for the Plane of the Apes and made the series even better. He did something which  a lot of people deem impossible, he made a sequel that was better than an already incredible film. And he did it again when he came back to direct War for the Planet of the Apes, which is unheard of. This is one of the few franchises that gets even better as the series went on. I think the series ended on a high note and there should not be a fourth film.

Anything by Phil Lord & Chris Miller

Here is another combo. Anything by directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller is absolute gold. Comedy is supposed to be the hardest genre to do but these guys are so talented and hilarious that it is no problem for them. They have made modern classics such as 21 and 22 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and The Lego Movie. They are one of the best comedic directors working right now and whenever their name’s are a part of the project, then you know its going to be a high quality film. They were recently set to direct this years Solo: A Star Wars Story, but after creative differences they decided to part ways with Disney. But their whole vibe and style is still present in the film. They leave such an incredible footprint on all the movies they work on whether they direct it or not. They both put so much care and effort to make films for the whole family while also pleasing to older audiences. Their more adult films like 21 and 22 Jump Street are some of the funniest films in recent history. Their next film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has already been crowned as the best animated feature of 2018, which is pretty incredible to say the least.

Best Directors Working Today

Since the beginning of the entertainment industry there have been some incredible directors who paved the way for today’s film makers such as Alfred Hitchcock who made some of the best horror movies and George Lucas who created the most famous space opera to date. But there is no doubt that some of the directors in the industry right now are some of  the best of all time. Whether they have been working for over thirty years, or if they are relatively new to the scene. Ranging from comedies, dramas, and action , here are some of the best directors that are doing an incredible job in telling their stories.

Ryan Coogler

Image result for Ryan coogler

If you’ve been reading this blog for the last couple of months then you know that Ryan Coogler is one of my favorite directors of all time. He has such beautiful vision with all of his films and does a great job of putting his own spin on established characters from iconic franchises. Ryan got his start after graduating from California State University and doing some short films while in college. This lead him to create his first feature film, Fruitevale Station in 2013. The film that put him on the map. After that, he directed movies such as Creed and Marvel’s Black Panther which are considered to be some of the best movies from the last few years.  With only 3 major pictures under his belt which were critical and financial darlings, he has already put an impressive footprint in the film industry.  He is set to write and direct Marvel’s Black Panther 2

Jordan Peele

Related image

Jordan Peele was already an established actor and comedian when he started directing. He got his break after joining the sketch comedy t.v. show Mad TV in the early 2000’s which is where he met his long time friend and partner Keegan-Micheal Key. From there they created one of the best sketch comedy shows Key and Peele. After the show ended he announced that he was directing a horror movie which caught everybody by surprise. It was set to be a dark comedy with hints of psychological horror, which at the time has not been done before to great success. The film had a small cast and crew but it turned out to be one of the best horror movies in recent history. This film was 2017’s Get Out. Peele had such a creative vision that has never been displayed at this level. He also produced this years BlacKkKlansman who also garnered critical acclaim. Peele demonstrates the struggles of being African-American in America and he does it in a way that isn’t too serious but still has a strong impact on society. Peele is set to produce a reebot of the famous horror t.v. show, The Twilight Zone.

James Wan

James Wan is considered to be the modern king of horror. He created franchises such as Saw and The Conjuring, which are considered to be some of the best horror films in recent history. He also delves into the realm of action every now and then and has directed action movies such as Furious 7 and Aquaman. Wan has crafts every little detail in his films from start to finish and adds such a refreshing take on dying or drawn out genres. It is a known fact that James Wan fixes anything he touches. His latest film, Aquaman is already breaking box office records by beating Avengers: Infinity War in pre-purchased tickets. And is already considered to be the best DC movie in the whole DC Extended Universe. James Wan is also set to direct and third Conjuring film and several different spin-offs in the same universe.

Is DC’s Birds of Prey movie a good idea ?

Image result for birds of prey dc

After the big screen debut of Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, DC knew that they have hit a goldmine. The positive feedback that they got for the character made Warner Bros. want to push the character even more. They quickly announced a Harley Quinn centered movie after the release of the movie titled Birds of Prey. With the smash hit that was Wonder Woman in 2017, DC wanted to give some other badass women some time in the spotlight. But with DC’s recent track record, fans are asking whether or not the movie is a good idea. Here on some reasons on why it could be a success for DC

It brings more super heroines into the DCEU

The movie will introduce new heroes and villains such as Batgirl, Huntress and Black Canary. All three have made appearances in different movies and television shows such as Arrow and the animated Justice League show. But this will be their first cinematic debut. The film can easily be as powerful and important as Wonder Woman, and if we look at how well it did both financially and critically, DC can have another smash hit. DC and Warner Bros are smart to start bringing in some more kick ass women to the franchise.

It can revamp the DCEU

The movie will be connected with the rest of the DCEU, so there will be several connections to the rest of the universe. Batgirl will most likely be with Batman before the events of the film. And Harley can reference events from past films. But just because something takes place in the same universe, it doesn’t have to feel like the other movies. Much like Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey can be a completely different tone and style than the rest of the dark and edgy universe. DC can attempt what Marvel is doing and can create different sub genres between films. If next years Shazam is successful, then we can expect Birds of Prey to be completely different than anything we have seen thus far in the DC Extended Universe.

Birds of Prey can set up any future solo films

There have been rumors concerning a Batgirl movie, and Birds of Prey is the best way to introduce the character to audiences’. It has been announced that DC and Warner Bros are prioritizing Birds of Prey so they can set up Batgirl for her solo movie, just how Marvel introduced both Black Panther and Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Considering how huge both Spidey’s and Black Panther’s movie was, it’s safe to assume that Birds of Prey will be important for Batgirl. Her last appearance on film was in 1997’s Batman and Robin, which was pretty much a failure. Birds of Prey will hopefully be the beginning of Batgirls’ cinematic adventures.

Birds of Prey is set to release sometime in 2020

Will Toy Story 4 be the most emotional one in the series ?

Image result for toy story 4

It has been almost ten years since we’ve seen our favorite toys on the big screen. And even after the heartbreaking ending from Toy Story 3, Pixar thought it was a good idea to have one more movie in the series. Will this finally be the definitive ending for Woody and the gang?

Several actors have expressed their emotional journey while working on the film. Recently Tom Hanks spoke about his experience on working on the sequel. The thought of Woody’s story finally ending after twenty plus years made him emotional. So emotional that he couldn’t even look at his fellow coworkers in the eye. According to Hanks…

“…The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually you’re facing him so you can look right up and you can talk about it. But I didn’t want to see them and I wanted to pretend they couldn’t see me. When I realized what they were going for, I realized, ‘Oh, this is a moment in history.'”

If Tom Hanks can’t hold back tears, how will we? There will be nothing but tears next summer.

Fellow actor and voice of Buzz Lightyear, Tim Allen also expressed his emotional last day of recording.

“It is so emotional, it’s so funny, it’s so big the idea of what they’ve come up with,” Allen said. “I’m startled. [Toy Story 3] was, I thought, amazing. This, I couldn’t even get through the last scene…a couple of the scenes toward the end were really hard to get through,” Allen added

When on The Talk, Allen compared the film to Avengers: Infinity War. He explains that Toy Story 4 will work in the same way that Infinity War worked. He stated…

If you’re at all a superhero fan, Infinity War, I’m a big superhero fan, that didn’t seem like it was going to work, and it was a lot of vignettes that all made sense,” Allen said in reference to how Toy Story 4’s story will work.

The film is rumored to be about Woody’s relationship with Bo Peep and how they must save her after she goes missing. Disney has yet to confirm whether or not this will be the final movie. But it is safe to assume that this will be the end of Buzz and Woody’s story.

Toy Story 4 is set to release June 21, 2019.

Recent Movies Everyone Should See

The last few years have been huge for Hollywood in diversity and inclusion of every type of people and are changing the norms of Hollywood. Here are some of the most important films of the last five years

Get Out

Image result for get out

Directed by Jordan Peele, Get Out is the perfect example of blending multiple genres into one. It’s a horror movie, a comedy movie, a suspense movie, a drama movie and I don’t know how. But it works and it is one of the best movies ever made in my opinion. The main actor Daniel Kaluuya does an incredible job of portraying a character in a malevolent without even knowing at first. The subtle nods to what’s to come. Jordan Peele did an amazing job of telling you what will happen in the movie without telling you. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the scene with the dead deer in the beginning was a huge symbol for what’s to come.

Anything by Ryan Coogler

Image result for ryan coogler movies

Ryan Coogler only has three feature films under his belt, but they are some of the most entertaining and emotional movies released in the last twenty years. Starting with Fruitvale Station that was about the death of Oscar Grant III. The film packs a heavy emotional punch because it focus’ on subjects that were taboo at the time. The film follows Oscar until his unjustified death by two police officers. The movie opens your eyes to what the African American community goes through on a daily basis. The film also created a bond between him and actor Michael B. Jordan, who has been in all of his films to date. This leads to him doing Creed, the best Rocky movie since the first Rocky. And the most important superhero movie, Black Panther. So to summarize everything, Fruitvale Station put Coogler on the map, Creed made him one of the best in the business right now, and Black Panther solidified the fact that he is one of the most important directors in Hollywood right now.

Wonder Woman

Image result for wonder woman

Wonder Woman is important because it is the first female led superhero film. With the genre being led by male leads, Wonder Woman brings in something that we didn’t think we needed until we got it. A bad ass woman that’s as powerful as Superman and as smart as Batman. The character made her debut in the disappointing Batman Vs Superman, but redeemed herself with this incredible film. Director Patty Jenkins wanted to make a film that oozed with strong women and wanted a world where young girls can can see someone that they can relate to. It also paved the way for every future female led superhero film like next years Captain Marvel and the upcoming Black Widow movie. Wonder Woman 1984 is set to release later in 2019 and I’m sure that it will just as good and empowering as the first film.

What’s next for Marvel after Avengers 4 ?

Image result for mcu 10th anniversary logo

With the insane ending of Avengers Infinity War and the recent news that Disney is in the process of acquiring 20th Century Fox, fans are wondering what’s next for Disney’s juggernaut, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But how much do we know about phase 4? Well for instance, we know that Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige has stated that “Avengers 4 will be the definitive ending of the current era of the MCU”.

During an interview with the Toronto Sun, Feige said:

Image result for kevin feige

“… story lines can come to an end. The best stories do come to an end. Return of the Jedi was an ending for a long time and as a 10-year-old in 1983 that carried me through 30 years until there was a sequel. That hasn’t happened before in the superhero genre. A new actor comes in and a new story line starts right away. We wanted to do it this way because we think that the best stories have a definitive ending to a story line. That’s certainly what’s going to happen next year with Avengers 4.”

But even though Marvel is done with their 10 year journey, they still have movies slated for release up until 2022. Series new comer, Captain Marvel is set to be the new face of the MCU after Avengers 4. Other films that have been announced are sequels to Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Black Panther.

The only thing that is certain is that Phase 4 will be the beginning of something new, due to the last three phases being an interconnected arc leading up to the events of Infinity War and Avengers 4. Feige views Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 as the equivalent of a fresh start, beginning “the next incarnation of the MCU”. But with the success of Black Panther and Wonder Woman, Marvel is attempting to make the MCU more diverse. Kevin Feige has promised that there will be more LGBTQ characters, after the positive reception to Valkyrie in Thor Ragnarok, the MCU’s first bisexual character. Meanwhile, he has also stated that there will be more strong women, stating in an interview:

“I think we’re getting to the point soon where we have so many great female characters that those are just our heroes as opposed to when are they all female, all male. It’s just the Marvel heroes, more than half of which will be women.”

Image result for disney acquires fox

But as mentioned before, 20th Century Fox is set to be acquired by Disney on January 1st 2019. Which means that characters from X-Men and The Fantastic Four will be able to interact with other heroes like in the comics. So with the addition of all these popular characters, there is now several different routes that Kevin Feige can take with the MCU. Will he integrate the X-Men in some way? And if he does how will he do it? But for right now, all we know is that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will stick around for many more years to come.

Why Venom’s failure is a good thing

Image result for venom movie

The Venom embargo was lifted late Monday night and the reviews are in. Both critics and fans were disappointed with the final product. They compared it to films such as 2004’s Catwoman because of its choppy dialogue and uneven tone. But can this be blessing in disguise?
Sony’s recent track with Spider-Man films haven’t been great since they rebooted the character back in 2012 with The Amazing Spider-Man. The movie made decent money at the box office and garnered positive reviews from critics and fans alike praising Andrew Garfield’s role as the titular character. Due to this success, Sony announced that starting with Venom, there would be spin-off films centered around Spidey’s greatest foes. Movies about The Sinister Six and Black Cat/Silver Sable were leading the charge. But after the release of the disappointing Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, Sony had to rethink this strategy and scrapped any future Amazing Spider-Man sequels and spin-offs. Cut to a few years later when Marvel announced that they and Sony have struck a deal to haveSpider-Man - Venom Spider-Man rebooted and have him join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with Captain America: Civil War. But Sony had other plans. They only gave Marvel partial rights to the character. They planned on making their own animated Spider-Man movie featuring Miles Morales as the main Spider-man instead of Peter Parker. This film is known as Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and looks promising. In addition to this, they wanted to make their Venom movie separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Which meant that Spider-Man will not appear in the movie. This was strike one for Venom. Early on in the movies production, it was announced that the movie will be a rated-R horror movie that would’ve featured Venom’s darker side. But that did not follow through and disappointed fans once again. This was a second strike. Venom had it’s premiere in late September 2018 and was bashed by critics. This was the final nail in the coffin for our favorite symbiote. But why is this a good thing?

There are several reasons on why Venom’s failure is a blessing in disguise. 1. It can lead to Marvel having the rights to every Spider-Man related character. 2. Sony will realize that all of spin-offs they want to make are a waste of time and resources and will give up on their silly dreams of creating an MCU esque franchise with their characters. I still haven’t seen the movie but I am interested to see the end result. Will it be good ? Probably not. But will I enjoy it? Most likely. Hopefully this will lead to one Marvel Universe with every character from the comics interacting with each other.

Is Star Wars failing ?

Image result for star wars logo

After the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans were split on how they felt about Disney acquiring Lucasfilm. It was a box office success but left some fans disappointed and worried with the future of Star Wars. Though skeptical, fans appreciated the movie for what it was and appreciated the fact that Star Wars has finally returned after the disappointing prequel trilogy. 2016 saw the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and was praised even more than The Force Awakens for its fresh take on the space opera with brand new characters and planets while tying up loose ends from previous films in the franchise. 2017’s The Last Jedi disappointed fans and has caused us to wonder if it was a good idea for Mickey Mouse to take over the Star Wars franchise and brand. It left fans even more divided than before with some people praising its story and visuals while others didn’t appreciate the new tone and decisions some of the characters took. I, personally, am in the disappointed side when it comes to The Last Jedi because of its lazy story telling and aggravating characters that ruined the movie for me. There are fans who were so enraged with how the movie turned out, that they have decided to boycott any future installments until Kathleen Kennedy (the current president of Lucasfilm) is out of the company. Fans accuse her for being the reason as to why Star Wars is heading to the gutter. 2018 saw the release saw the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, also knownImage result for solo a star wars story as the first Star Wars movie to fail at the box office. This was the first film to be released during the boycott and the box office numbers shows the damage that fans have done. There was also a slew of different problems such as its release date and how close it was to other huge movies like Infinity War and Deadpool 2, the firing of directors in the middle of production, and having to hire an acting coach for the main actor that lead to its demise. It made $392.9 million worldwide, which might seem pretty impressive for most movies. But for Star Wars standard, its a complete box office flop. Which is a shame, because it was a pretty awesome movie. It was a huge improvement from The Last Jedi in my opinion and it left me wanting more of Hans’ adventures with Chewbacca before he met Luke and Leia. As mentioned before, it was overshadowed by the massively successful Avengers Infinity War which left the whole world broken and has us still wondering what happened to our favorite heroes. Solo: A Star Wars Story was the movie we needed after the emotional and heartbreaking ride that was Infinity War. Disney took this as a wake up call, and is reevaluating the entire future of Star Wars by cancelling every spin-off movie in development to solely focus on making Episode IX the best film they can make.

Why is the DC extended universe failing ?

Why are the DC Extended Universe movies considered bad or failures when compared to their competition over at Marvel? Some might say it is due to weak storytelling, weak CGI (computer-generated imagery) , lazy dialogue, or a combination of several different issues. A great deal of fans point the blame at Zack Snyder for not trying hard enough. But for the most part, there are countless problems both in front and behind the camera that are hurting these films. Suicide Squad and Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, where both panned by critics and fans alike criticizing its plot and rush in production to compete with Marvel. I personally enjoyed both movies. I thought they were entertaining but not as fun and exciting as a Marvel movie. I personally feel like Warner Brothers are trying so hard for their DC movies to perform just as good as Marvel movies at the box office and are attempting to push out a connected universe to bring in more fans. It isn’t difficult to produce a good DC movie, it has been done before with the Dark Knight trilogy from Christopher Nolan and last years Wonder Woman. So it’s not that they can’t do it, it’s that they’re doing it for the wrong reasons in my opinion.

After the release of Wonder Woman, DC announced that they are not going to do the whole connected universe plot that transcends over several films like Marvel and will focus on solo character driven stories with a few Easter eggs and cameos to please the fans. This is the best thing they can do right now as they fix the whole universe.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe works because each new installment in the franchise is different from the last in tone and genre. Captain America: The Winter Solider is considered to be a spy/thriller film, while Thor Ragnarok and Ant-Man are considered comedies. They take place in the same universe, but are both different in tone and genre This is where Marvel exceeds DC because for the most part, every movie in the DCEU looks and feels the exact same. Dark and Depressing. All four movies have the same drab color pallet and depressing mood. To counter this, Warner Brothers attempted to break their mold, and hired a new director to finish Zack Snyders work on Justice League after he had to leave due to personal reasons.

This new director was Joss Whedon, director of Marvel’s The Avengers and its sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron.
WB thought that Whedon would bring a light hearted tone that was desperately needed in their franchise. Whedon made the movie more light hearted, but in doing so created an unbalanced tone throughout the whole movie. At one point it was dark and serious and it jumps to a colorful comedic scene with not buffer in between and it confused fans because it felt like a Zack Snyder movie, but felt like a Joss Whedon movie at the same time are caused a clash of tones that did not flow well. The final product left fans dissapointed and upset with where the franchise is headed.
Upcoming films like Shazam and Aquaman look promising and have high expectations from fans but only time will tell if the DC Extended Universe has changed for the better.

Are superhero movies going “the way of the Western”?

Marvel_Cinematic_Universe_logo

During the 80’s and 90’s, the only way to watch anything with superheroes would be through television. Shows such as X-Men The Animated Series and Batman were the most popular way to watch these characters. Nowadays, superheros are taking over every form of media especially the film industry. Movies such as Avengers:Infinity War and The Dark Knight are making billions of dollars and have taken the world by storm. Though there is an increase of fans when each movie releases, there is also an increase of naysayers. Some of these naysayers are important figures in the film industry like Steven Spielberg and James Cameron.

While promoting his film Bridge of Spies, Spielberg describes the superhero genre as “going the way of the Western”. Spielberg explains that he was around when the Western genre died and explained that “there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western. It doesn’t mean there won’t be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns”. He explains that modern film studios are more worried about what will make the most money rather than what will make the best film.

Another influential director, James Cameron is tired of the superhero genre and explains that he “[hopes] we’ll start getting Avenger fatigue here pretty soon…Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on, guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”. Cameron recently came under fire for criticizing 2017’s Wonder Woman for taking a step back when it comes to female led films.

Even actors who have been in superhero films have bashed the genre publicly. Actors such as Cillian Murphy who played Scarecrow in The Dark Trilogy and Hugo Weaving who played Red Skull in Captain America:The First Avenger have expressed that they are both tired of the genre. Murphy explains that “It was a different time when we made Batman Begins”. A-list actor, Mel Gibson turned down the role of Odin in Thor and has explained that he is confused with why these movies are as popular as they are. “I look at them and scratch my head. I’m really baffled by it…” and “ If you’re spending outrageous amounts of money, $180 million or more, I don’t know how you make it back after the taxman gets you, and after you give half to the exhibitors… what did they spend on Batman V Superman that they’re admitting to? And it’s a piece of s**t”.

So are superhero movies the modern Western? It depends who you ask. Fans and studio executives will argue no. But Hollywood veterans will say otherwise. As of right now the superhero genre is safe and is here to stay for the next several years. Only time will tell if the superhero genre will fade away.

Here are the links to the individual interviews:
